Virtual Trips

Dear Mountaineer:

Adventure WV, like all of WVU, has been working hard to determine how to best support you in this time of COVID-19. Because of the ongoing response to COVID-19, we know it’s within our community’s best interests to move to virtual First-Year Trip (FYT) programming for Summer 2020.

Our goal is to help your transition to WVU. During your Virtual First-Year Trip, you’ll connect virtually with other new students and peer mentors. You’ll build friendships in a smaller group setting and feel more prepared for your upcoming WVU experience.

Here is some important information you should know.

Which first-year trips are being offered virtually and which are in person?

As of Friday, June 19, 2020, all Summer 2020 Adventure WV First-Year Trips have pivoted to a virtual format. All students have received an email informing them that their trip will now be virtual.

What can I expect from a virtual FYT experience?

  1. Adventure WV Virtual First-Year Trips are being created for small cohorts of incoming students based upon current trip registrations. Online, interactive sessions for these groups will be held during the originally scheduled trip dates.

  2. If you were registered for an Adventure WV First-Year Trip (either virtual or in-person trip) prior to June 19, 2020, then you are ALREADY REGISTERED for an Adventure WV Virtual First-Year Trip! You do not have to do anything else. If you are not currently registered and would like to register for a Virtual First-Year Trip, you can do so here:

  3. We will use the Zoom platform for two sessions - these will take place from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday night during your scheduled trip. You will be encouraged to complete a brief independent activity sometime after your Tuesday night session but before your Wednesday session, which will be incorporated into the Wednesday night session (don't worry, it'll be fun!). Additionally, there will be opportunities to connect with the student staff outside of the scheduled sessions for more personal check-ins and the chance to ask questions. These sessions will be led by highly trained Adventure WV student staff members. Registered students will receive a resource packet from Adventure WV.

  4. Before your scheduled sessions, you will receive a text and phone call from your Adventure WV student staff trip leader.

  5. Registered students will receive information with date and time details and instructions on how to use Zoom from an Adventure WV staff member. (Please note that to participate using Zoom you’ll need to have access to the internet and video and audio capabilities, either through a laptop or cell phone.)

  6. There will be NO CHARGE for Adventure WV Virtual First-Year Trip. You WILL NOT be charged the $95 processing/commitment fee outlined in your program agreement.

  7. We WILL NOT offer WVUe188, the academic credit associated with FYTs during the fall 2020 semester for Virtual Trips. We will remove permission (if previously granted) to register for the course. Do NOT register for the course during your June Virtual New Student Orientation.

  8. We WILL offer a series of FREE FALL IN-PERSON EXPERIENCES (if these types of programs are permitted at that time) as a substitute for your first-year trip. A schedule of these fall offerings will be available soon.

Why should I participate in a Virtual First-Year Trip?

One of the hardest things about starting at WVU (or any college) is making friends and building a social network. While we can’t get groups together in person yet, our virtual trips will connect you with incoming and current WVU students. When you arrive on campus, you’ll see familiar faces and friends.

Participants who attend both trip sessions will:

  • Be eligible to participate in TWO fall in-person experiences for FREE.

  • Receive an Adventure WV participant T-shirt.

  • Be entered in a raffle for a FREE CANOPY TOUR for yourself and up to three guests (

  • Be entered in a raffle for a FREE spot (not including airfare to/from Denver International Airport) on our Sophomore Outdoor Adventure Reorientation Utah Program in May of 2021. Participants in this program spend two weeks in the desert Southwest. In 2020, the trip was valued at $900. Learn more:

Be entered in a raffle for a FREE spot on our SOAR Outdoor Adventure Reorientation New River Gorge Program in May 2021. Participants spend one week in the New River Gorge area of West Virginia. In 2020, the trip was valued at $495. See
